Malaria
An estimated 1.2 million people die of malaria each year, 75 percent of them African children. Three thousand Africans die daily from malaria, and tens of millions suffer chronically from the debilitating disease, even though it is preventable and curable.
Of course, the slums of Nairobi are a prime breeding ground for the disease, but there is a way to cut down on its spread. Over the past five years, the Kenyan government has given out 13.5 million mosquito nets treated with an insecticide, resulting in a drop in child deaths from malaria by more than 40 percent over that time period. Kenya’s health minister reports that the program saved seven children for every 1,000 mosquito nets used.

Hope Partnership hopes to begin distribution of the nets in the Marthare Valley in the near future as a part of its CHE outreach and child sponsorship program. Follow-up education will be provided by Community Health Evangelists, social workers, and teachers.
