Letters and gifts to your child

Writing letters to your sponsored child is an important part of sponsorship because it shows the children that you care about them and want to be a part of encouraging their development.  It’s good for the children to hear you are proud of them and praying for them.  It is also a great opportunity to get to know more about the child as well as allowing the child to know more about you and your family.

Can I send a picture of my family?

Yes!  Including a picture of your family is a great way for the children to see firsthand who is praying for them and writing to them.  Please make sure your picture does not include material items such as cars, your home, toys, or other possessions.

What can I say in my letter?

Deciding how and what to write in your letter can be difficult.  Following are some ideas of what you can write about in your short letter:

  • Describe the members of your family.
  • Discuss your favorite activities, hobbies, and sports.
  • Briefly describe what you do at work, church, or school.
  • Talk about your relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Provide a general description of where you live (no specific address).  Tell them about the climate and land type.
  • Ask your child the same types of questions about what they like to do, where they live, and what they are learning in school.

Where do I send my letter?
After writing your letter, put it into an envelope with the child’s name and ID number on it, then place this envelope into another envelope addressed to:

Mathare Family Hope Center
PO Box 71484 – 00622
Nairobi, Kenya
East Africa

Be sure to use International Postage Rates; currently, that is $ .90 for one ounce or less.  Check with your Post Office for the official weight and rates.  You can also send a letter and picture in with your regular monthly donation.  Make sure you place your letter in a separate envelope with the child’s name and ID number on it and we’ll get it sent along.

Can I send a gift to my sponsored child?
We prefer all children be treated equally; it could create a problem if some children received gifts while others did not.  Please do not send personal gifts to your sponsored child.  On the other side of this, it costs money for them to get packages out of customs, which they cannot afford most of the time.  If you would like to send a birthday or Christmas donation, you can send extra money in with your regular donation and specify what the money is for.  We will send that money on in a special account, which will cover a birthday party and Christmas party for the children.
