Adventures in Africa
Twenty-two young adults left Indianapolis on June 10 for the adventure of a lifetime: two months working in Kenya as CMF REACH interns. The group is a mix of college students, recent graduates, medical students and grad school students, but all share a common interest in helping the people of Kenya.
Eighteen of the interns will spend all of their time in Nairobi working with the Hope Partnership project. (The other four will divide their time between Nairobi and work with the Maasai people.) In Nairobi, the interns will enjoy a wide range of opportunities for service at the Hope Centers, including holding Vacation Bible Schools, helping out in the Centers’ school classrooms, running sports camps for the children, assisting with the microfinance program and prayer walking through the Mathare slums.
They’ll also be involved in many ways with Hope’s HIV/AIDS ministries. For example, they will make home visits to victims and train family members and neighbors in how to care for the bedridden. Many will work in the VCT (Volunteer Counseling Testing) clinics and will also assist with the AIDS prevention training programs for children, mothers and other adults.
Most importantly, these bright and enthusiastic young people will build relationships with the Kenyans and Americans who are already in Kenya working with the AIDS victims, as well as those who are living with the virus, reflecting the love of Christ in a land of desperate need.
